it comes from the old scots sayin of red sky at night - shepards delight, meaning that if the sky is red when the sun goes down then it is unlikely to rain. the converse being red sky in the morning - shepards warning. Probably means that the good news and so called 'delight' wont follow him

red sky at night is a comfort blanket, a reassurance that everything will be ok in the morning, bright and sunny - he's lost that assurance and is vulnerable

this is a lonely song, a pretty one, but still a lonely one
