Who ever said there were ullage engines on the first stage? I certainly didn't. The first stage is ground started... no need for ullage engines when you have gravity. ;-)
Crikey rakrupski, did it really take you four months to think of that response?!! Anyway, no one else mentioned that ullage engine fact but me (I think). And you are correct about the reason why there are no ullage engines on the first stage. However, I think they should have put ullage engines on the first stage - and ignited them just as the rocket was taking off - to make the take off seem even more exciting than it already was!
Saturne V the finest rocket ever built! The Schuttle is more like a truck or a bus than a rocket. Space is not for TOURISTS. That was true and remains true!!!
At low altitudes the vacuum created in the boattail will cause base heating so you need insulation, s/s materials and other means of reducing the heat effect.

The "IP" is "Impact Point" which is constantly calculated - it's where the vehicle would fall if it quit at that point.
At first the IP is over land, then it's over water, finally it's a moot point.
That's why flight sounded "annoyed", because the RSO gave him a useless report.
I'm 47 and just about remember the launch of some of the Saturn rockets even now its 37yrs since the last one took off.
It's one of those things that you never forget.
