In the novel Dwight and Moria don't t see the race they instead, go on a fishing trip in the mountains while the race is going on. They only hear about Peter's victory in the motor race, in their hotel
, whilst they are listening to the evening news on the radio.

It looks too hot to have been filmed in Melbourne and in the novel race takes place in mid winter. Mind judging by what Ava Gardner famously said about her time while filming in Melbourne being back in California must have been like heaven.

Wikipedia confirms it was filmed at Riverside Raceway with cars including a Jaguar XK150, a Jaguar D-Type, a Porsche 356, a Mercedes-Benz gullwing, and a Corvette. (Sorry for the thumbs down rating - hit it by accident - will correct later.)

I think George Miller got the idea for Mad Max and Road warrior from this movie.
