Actually, GWtW came out 4 months after Oz., so that had no impact on its popularity...however, it wound up losing money in its first release and wasn't until its 1949 reissue that it turned a profit...it was after the annual TV showings began in 1956 that Oz became an American institution.

Populist actually. It's about the gold standard in the east. If you recall, Dorthy's shoes and the start of the yellow brick road (gold) were silver. They were make ruby in the movie to enhance the amount of color because it was the first major picture shown in color.
