Members of Chile's indigenous Mapuche community are vowing to take back what they say is stolen land. For years, activists have been trying to re-claim what they say is ancestral territory. But Chile's government disagrees. Last week, a confrontation over the issue turned deadly.
A 22-year-old Mapuche man was shot and killed by police, after demonstrators clashed with them during a protest.
Our Latin America editor Lucia Newman has more from Tumeco, Chile.

  • I think it's disrespectful to treat Chileans like that, and among other cultures too. It's easy to see things from outside, and with this behavior you are not helping anybody. For people like you plus the lack of education about our indigenous cultures, it is difficult to understand and being empathetic among our diversity. I hope that the access to info and the new generations would better understand this issue. At least there are people who are interested.

    Fuerza al pueblo Mapuche!

  • We live in a slavery nation. No Health, no Education. In Chile we are not people, we are slaves of the money making machine. People around the world don't know how it is to live in a "poblacion" (chilean ghetto). Here we really know about violence, death and brutallity. we kill ourselves like mad dogs. We are condemned to violence.

  • Our shitty lefttist regime did nothing for our people, and they had 20 damn years to solve this issue.

We're talking about, our biggest proud, the only ones who were brave enough,to stand and fight against the invaders for hundreds of years.

    For what?

To allow those fascist pigs disguised as socialists,to sell their land to those spanish bastards,to enslave us all once again!

No one in my country wants to admit it, BUT WE NEVER ACHIEVED OUR INDEPENDENCE.

  • @galancarloncho I just left Chile 2 years ago. I know what they've done and I don't support that at all. My comment was directed to other user and now it appears on the top. Anyways, I'm not the enemy, as me other people I've known are very interested in what is happening with aboriginals peoples and don't be defensive with the wrong person.

  • @patesoni You don't have any idea what this people do. You don't live in Chile ;)
