Bordesley Green Neighbourhood Forum in Birmingham is one of four community groups experiment with new ways to control public money. They are taking part in a pilot called the Neighbourhood Performance Reward Grant or NPRG. In 2007 the Forum received £10,000 from Birmingham City Council to tackle issues of grime and how that relates to crime. They decided to tackle fly tipping, increase recycling from big rubbish collections and deal with a problem with cowboy builder flushing sewage directly into a local stream. If they hit their targets the forum will receive a further £15,000. This short introductory film was made for a conference in The Hague in January 2008: http://www.wijkveiligheiddenhaag.nl

This is a fantastic example of grass-roots community development. Congratulations! I currently live in Australia and used to live in Bordesley Green as a child. It's nice to see people improving the neighbourhood and taking pride in it and ownership of it. I hope other neighbourhoods, including here, are encouraged to follow your example.
