K.R. Narayanan was the first person from the dalit community to become the President of India. Inspite of being a University rank holder, Narayanan was denied a teaching post in the university because of him being a dalit. He completed his Masters in London School Of Economics and came back to India to join the Indian Foreign Service. He was considered by many, including Jawaharlal Nehru as the finest diplomat the country has ever seen.

Narayanan grew up in abject poverty and misery but he went on to become the President of the (so called) Largest democracy in the world. This happened much before Americans( who got independence much before India) elected a black president. It was his sheer will power and fighting spirit together with un-matched brilliance that lead him to such hights. There was nobody to help, nobody to support, nobody to encourage, but just himself. Hats off!!

Another thing about India's rural caste problems. How many Americans watching this, grew up in America's farm land - one of the small towns - without any wealth or farm land? I can tell first hand - they treat their poor like shit. On a higher level perhaps, but that's only because the industral areas of the US made this country rich, (the poor move and get jobs) and we have a far fewer people 'per square mile' than the ancient country of India. Hi Natalie, you are absolutely right. But this stupid caste system is not new, its working from stone age time and will take time in vanishing from the society. Me being dalit suffered a lot since my childhood but fortunately got a chance to be educated and coming in to the stream of people where castism is less effective but unfortunately everyone is not lucky enough. What a touching story of the incredible injustice that the HINDU religion with its caste system imposes upon other people. I am not dark but I am proudly saying that I am dalit and I am proud to be a dalit because now whereever I am its because of me being a dalit. There are many dark people who doesn't belong to dalits. Go to south India and you will find almost everyone dark.
