As you said, Geneva did not exist. It was a different time and the A bomb was the only deterrent we had. It worked. I don't recognize a population as civilian once they are determined to take up arms against another military . Once that happens, they are combatants. It was a fact that the Japanese were going to fight till the end with every man woman and child. It was a pre emptive strike that no matter how vile its ending, it saved more than it killed, especially on our side.

Would the same action work today? No. The only reason the bomb wouldnt work for todays war is that these people do not care for human life. It is useless to them if it isn't subserviant.
