Vernon Dalhart (not his real name) first recorded this song. It was the first "million seller" in the U.S. There was a major copyright lawsuit that went to the U.S. Supreme Court. It is based on a true story. If u Google, there are pictures of the Wreck of the Old '97.

These Snow videos bring back memories of my visit to his 1971 show in Southampton, England.
His warm-up groups were English bands who seem totally forgotten nowadays.
