I love her comments and thoughts and I really get so much out of her books because she is saying what I have felt and thought in my life. It saddens me that people can't move past their own biases to really listen to the struggle and engage in it with others...instead they choose to reduce themselves to making petty comments in lieu of critical thinking. Great book of hers..."Teaching to Transgress"
i read an article in Critical Asian Studies regarding the ideologies behind 'Asian' films released in North America and Asian 'domestic' films. There are plenty of studies critically examining the effects of globalization and film-making. The nuances of 'race' and culture are extremely complex as they are layered by multiple histories of 'silencing' and various struggles. Do you have access to academic journals? I can send you something if you wish. PM me.
Everyone goes along with the claim that Spike Lee represents something positive in American filmmaking. Everyone who knows better keeps his or her mouth shut. Lee is largely an invention, a public relations gimmick. His career as a filmmaker is a hollow shell that has been filled up with a fictitious content by various elements for their own self-serving reasons.
Lee is nothing of any importance in the history of American cinema; he does, however, represent something in American social life—but something unfeeling, something distinctly repellent.
Filmmaking is a white Artform. Bell is arrogant. The Country is 75% white. Why shouldn't they dominate. If you don't like how it is, you should move to a black nation. All Spike is doing is stealing White culture.
