Quoting from the film "Dune", "He who controls the Spice controls the universe." In this case 'he" is OPEC and "spice" is oil, and "universe" is "world economy". OPEC members are our enemies. They are waging an economic war directly on the U.S.. Korin is a smart woman. Thanks for posting.
Korin is certainly a smart woman, but the ideas she gives in this presentation are a condensed version of what is given in much greater detail in Robert Zubrin's book Energy Victory, which I recommend highly. The supporting legislation is called the Open Fuel standard Act of 2009, currently being considered in Congress.`
Rising crop prices is not a good idea. Corn prices do not cause starvation, but it does increase prices for poor people in the 3rd world simply because there is increased demand, also other things are increasing in price because corn is grown instead of other things. Corn is not a good thing to make ethanol out of. I agree, remove tariffs on ethanol.
I thought coal was a fossil fuel. If that is the case, dismissing this input leads her to an erroneous conclusion that the cost of ethanol production is negligible.
Anne doesn't account for the higher prices we are paying for food due to corn being used for fuel instead of feed for our livestock. She doesn't account for the increased environmental damage growing corn has on farmland, and she doesn't factor in the cost of subsidies to the corn industry.
Those of us who actually watched this extra-ordinary speaker heard her talk in detail about using sugar cane instead of corn (like Brazil). Did you miss this part?
The USA has the largest reserves of coal in the world. Do you WANT people who are funding terrorism to get $800 Billion / year? Your second fiction: it is not a big deal to you earning say, $25 / hour, that a barrel of oil cost $140 / barrel. But a poor farmer making $5 a day, the price of gasoline is a crippling tax. Food is rotting in the fields because of the cost of gasoline prevents it from being driven into town. What is driving up the price of food is oil going from $11/b to $150/b.
