sometimes it is, for major grade crossings. theres a switch in the cab thats flipped to turn the air horn on automaticly when the whistle chord is pulled. the horn is the same type used as Alco PA's, so they operate on a chord thats pulled....
not on the 4449!! There's a small lever that is to the left of the automatic brake valve and sounds the air horn. The whistle lever is above and to the right of the throttle.
I have been in love with this beautiful Locomotive for 30 thirty years, She came thru my little town (Lathrop, Ca.) in 1978 sporting the "Freedom Train" colors when I was 6 years old. I will tell you all it was love at first sight ! My Addiction to steam is all your fault !!!
She was on her way to Owosso, Michigan for Train Festival. By the Way, even though you didn't get a shot of her, you still got lucky to be on an Amtrak train and see a real steam locomotive pass, that dosen't happen very often so you got lucky.
yah I figured that was the case I saw alot of Private railcars on the rear all from owners I know I however was on the way to Seattle to go up to Canada all by rail I did miss the shot but you are right seeing her from an Amtrak train was nice my pain on that got eased because the next week I was on the UP 844 from Denver to Cheyenne another Awsome piece of mechinery I was very impressed by the 844..the California Zepher was on a reroute through Wyoming and 844 passed them too in Colorado
I did get the honer of rideing behind this engine a few times before one was the final run of the Montana Daylight excoursion train and the other was on the NRHS Portland trip with the SP&S 700 but the damn photo shop lost all those photos so I have nothing but memories of the NRHS trip but my trip on the MRL across Montana was great with this engine one of my favorites but I was in awe by the 844 WOW
