originally perhaps, but I think the same thing happened with names like Taylor or Thatcher, that did describe the individual's profession (or sectarian affiliation, in this case), but no longer do today. I know this to be the case with (profession-related) european surnames because of guilds and their heredity. I'm assuming the same happened in India, mainly because of caste system (and its strict heredity)

If she'd only tone down the fireworks and pitch her voice lower she'd rise beyond mere playing to galleries and be a worthy granddaughter of pattamal.
