It goes beyond race relations. I read Haneke said that at the core this film is about a failure in communication from individual to individual at the fundamental levels. He proposes that our communication has ultimately failed, but that the attempts at breaking this barriers are important. Look at all the scenes. All of them present either effective or mostly uneffective communication between individuals. This film is very important not just to cinema, but to all of us. It is art.
I agree. this is one of Haneke's few 'deep' films IMO. Without communication, society breaks down, but restoring this dialogue, and eradicating the existing barriers that prevent meaningful engagement, is extraordinarily difficult, maybe even impossible, when one considers the reasons for the alleged break down in the first place. e.g lack of trust etc.
