Yes, the song was originally written in French, but it has been translated into other languages.

I'm sure that their mother tongue is English - the English spoken in their part of Ireland.
English is the mother tongue of all but about 25,000 people in Ireland.
The priests, like many people who live in Ireland, learnt Irish in school, just as they learnt Latin in school.
