Brother. Why on earth would Al-Azhar University allow Sh. Abdul Basit to even becmoe a recitor if using Maqaamat were haram. Yes Maqaamat are used in singing, but doesnt mean Maqaamaat are haram. And not all singing is haram. Nashids are halal and very good to listen to. The Maqaamaat are used to beautify our recitation of the Qur'an since Allah (swt) ordered us to and so did the Prophet (saws).
