The rotorheads would not want 10000+ STOL grasshoppers in the U.S. Army Aviation arsenal. But dynmicpara if were to be general of the U.S. Army, you can fight Afghanistan FAR more effectively and defeat a low tech adversary like the Taliban.

The current US Military leadership is a collection of Asshats.

Why else would they refuse to use STOL observation aircraft?

Especially against an unsophisticated enemy such as the US faces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Rather they insist on using complicated, expensive helicopters and Predators neither of which are best suited for the job.
