I do the same. I don't know when or how it happened, but one day I noticed my penchant for leaving out the index finger. It took me a while to see Jerry doing the same and now I am practicing his Breakdown, note by note:) First learn to play it WITH the index finger and when then leave it out.
I guess, if you are used to pick, sooner or later you develop a sense for finger independence, enabling you to play on any string with any finger anywhere in the measure.
Haha.. I hear ya.. he probably wasn't the first but it sure was cool to see that! Sweeping arpeggios still isn't one of my strong points but I keep workin' on it!
