Stephanie Lenz, I do not understand you. You must be a very frustrated woman. Your son is already 6 now, don't you think it is time now to remove this uselese video? Or shall your private war against Prince be forever?

I don't have a private war against Prince. I have a passion for the First Amendment.

    And my son is 7.

As always, a fan of the music. Not so much a fan of the artist ;) Was just listening to "Purple Rain" last night.

Shit! I was just going to go to Best Buy and purchase this very Prince CD...when suddenly the song came on YouTube! I'm saved! Now I won't buy the CD and just listen to this one instead, and keep my money in my pocket. Thanks piracy!

+1 Copyright laws are garbage. We need a new system that protects small fry and forces the big businesses to back the fuck off.

This video represents a landmark decision in US digital copyright law. It should remain online, and on YouTube in particular, so long as human beings record and share their daily activities.

She's not crazy, and neither is the US District Court in San Jose which found in her favour:

    eff . org /files/filenode/lenz_v_universal/lenzorder082008.pdf

Stephanie has done all of us every day folk who care to share these kinds of moments with friends, family and whoever else an enormous service.

I'm simply shocked that you would tell someone to take down a video of their baby on the net because of incidental use of the music in the background.

She didn't rip the song and put it into the video with a program; it was playing in the background. Should everyone be unable to upload any video with audio if there's copyrighted music playing in the background? The answer is no.

In this case Prince loses against YouTube. No reason to present him as the loser in this case for already six years. This stupid video can be deleted. The former baby is old now.

What Prince want or not want has nothing to with this. He is not allowed to abuse the law for his own gain. Stephanie Lenz has every right to upload this video. Prince have every right to not like it, but he has no right to remove this video.

Found you due to an EFF story - good work on taking The Nameless One to task and standing up for common sense in copyright law. Peace!

Yes, he could. But he does not want to. Period.

Prince does not want to let YouTube earn money with his work. He does not want to be a part or even a SLAVE! of this kind of industry. Nobody has any right to attack for him for this decision.

You can find a lot of Prince stuff (music, videos, DVDs) free via the internet. You only have to search for the various Prince fan pages. There you find nearly everything. But at YouTube it is strictly forbidden to post music of Prince. We'd better accept it.
