I've been to Shanghai a couple of times. Shanghainese are quite arrogant to people from other parts of China.

Why do these Americans go all the way to China when there are plenty of Americans babies that need adopting?
Should be illegal.

wow! crazy to see this on paul merton's show! I stayed there three times, and four of my siblings are adopted from China.
I just want to say, a lot of these parents who are adopting (not buying!!!!) Chinese babies encourage interest in the Chinese culture as the children get older.
And also, these children are much much much better off in this situation. If you have ever been in a Chinese orphanage, you would know exactly why.

seriousness and conservativeness are highly regarded as a taste of "class" or "status" in not only England but also other western european countries like Holland, Germany etc. and they also expect others to have this kind of "manner". chinese may consider it as annoyingly rude or uncivilized. i think it's not about which standard we should use to measure people from surface, but there are common things valued by all cultures, which are honesty and sincerety. try them, and they will understand.

the thing is although china has been developed so much that even supasses western standards in many aspects, it is not seen by both sides or at least appreciated properly. Chinese in china need to have a fair picutre of the west and so does the west. in this aspect, one important thing is there is the culure difference we always overlooked. your mentioning the arrogance of london people, i have to say that it is their way of beings.
