What must one be/do to join the cossacks? I am not from russia btw, but do plan to move there in the near future.

There little differenes. Just orthodox christian can join,he must be slavic or kalmyk with cossacks ancestry.
Cossacks have own dialect and culture which more familiar with ukrainian,but still its not rus or ukr.

Ukraineans it is part of Russian nation. Zaporizhzhya Cossacks, Terek Cossacks, Don Cossacks, Ural and Siberian Cossacks. They all fought for Russia.
