A three-episode TV mini-series produced by the BBC, "Beethoven" is a very powerful and moving docudrama based on the life and music of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Fantastically written and beautifully directed, the series constitutes a thorough and accurate reconstruction of Beethoven's life, from his troubled childhood to his death at the age of 56. Paul Rhys's masterful portrayal of Beethoven is particularly noteworthy, doing well to convey in vivid colour the natural genius of the Great Man and the isolation, turmoil and despair he experienced throughout his eventful life. Insightful narration from the popular conductor, composer and presenter Charles Hazlewood does well to add a sophisticated educational dimension to the series, as well as to encourage a seamless and comfortable flow of the story. This is an absolute must-watch!

All those things I expect contributed, but I think you missed some major factors - his treatment as a child by both his mother and father. "Man hands on misery to man."
Also, this documentary seems to portray him in an almost mentally unstable way. I'm not sure how accurate this is, but if true, it adds a much deeper aspect to his reactions to this situation.
you are right his father was abusive as hell and drunk half the time, and his mother didn't even speak up or show that she cared the least about him. She was literally useless as a parent, unless I've got the history wrong.
Not feeling any love from your parents will definitely fuck you up BAD.
It's sad to say, I know his feelings about music... And his feelings in general. I've had the same parental abuse. He was a useless drunkard ne'erdowell. Yet i'm still only 15, with another "bad" parent. my emotions are overwhelming, and then i have to go play beautiful music on my piano...
true, im sure that time has added to the romatic idealization that beethoven was a raving madman in his later years. BUT also remember he WAS a very passionate and emotional man, and without a doubt his deafness must have driven him to the point of walking a tightrope between genius and insanity.
