From London - According to research in the Lancet Oncology, gum disease raises the risk of cancer. In a study of nearly 50,000 men, those with gum disease had a 14% higher risk of developing cancer. In those who didn't smoke, the risk was 21%. Gum disease raises the risk of lung cancer by 36%, the risk of kidney cancer by 49% and the risk of pancreatic cancer by 54%.

From Toronto - Using antipsychotic medication in those who are demented may lead to adverse reactions, according to research in the Archives of Internal Medicine. In a study of over 40,000 patients with dementia, those taking antipsychotic medications were 2-3 times more likely to develop an adverse event that required admission to hospital. Nearly 1 in 6 people admitted to nursing homes are prescribed antipsychotic medication within 100 days of admission.

And finally, from Texas - The American Heart Association recommends that everyone with high blood pressure own a home monitor in order to perform regular pressure checks. Home monitors, available for as little as $50 to $100, can help doctors prescribe blood pressure medications more accurately. Hypertension is a leading cause of heart attack, stroke and death, and affects about 72 million Americans.
