The baiji is Functionally extinct. Lipotes vexilifier is the first species of cetacean -- whales, dolphins and porpoises -- to disappear from our globe in modern times...the first large mammal to go extinct as a result of man's destruction of their natural habitat and ressources.
The disappearance of the Baiji from our planet is a tragedy for animal lovers around the world --and a tragic milestone for international animal conservation.
In the coming 5, 10 years Asia will be impacted by a never before seen economic growth, especially in countries such as China, Vietnam, Thailand, India and Pakistan.
This economic growth will impact Asia's freshwater and river systems, placing them under a continually straining pressure -- and along with them, the stress will not only be felt by their fragile inhabitants like the remaining populations of the Yangtze finless porpoise and the Irrawaddy Dolphin, but also on the freshwater resources of millions of humans as well.
The U.N. declared the decade from 2005 -- 2015 as the Decade for Action Water for Life. At the same time the UNEP declared the up-coming year as the Year of the Dolphins. Many organizations as well as companies have recognized the signs. Let us also see the tragic fate of the baiji as a signal for the future, and an important milestone: It is time for action... visit: http://cbc.amnh.org/index.html#SlideF...

China didn't do a 1/2 they did an 1/8 ass job of trying to save this sweet gentle creature. The population declined as those dams were built without regard to what will happen to the enviroment.Well China is talking breeding program with 5 dolphins left too little too late they are less than 10 still out there-my opinion I'd say 5.Leave the last of them alone. You've done enough to them.
The man is stupid who extinct animals, well I just wanna say to those who complaining on China, almost 41 % of all extinct animals in modern history is extincted in Australia, 5 % in China.
If we wanna save animals we have to help poor countries and rich countries must be better to save them. Because we can do it, we have already saved some animals.
