i gotta say that these guys (the bays) came to guadalajara (mexico) like 6 years ago. and it was a concert with invitation, not tickets that you could buy. so those who were there were supposed to be priviliged. the thing is that before the bays, another band played. a very mediocre and meaningless local band called sussie 4. the moment they stopped, 80 percent of the audience left the place. can you believe it? almost everyone didn't stay for the musicians they were invited to listen. idiots
The last comment is bang on. I saw them at warwick and the RFH. It would be impossible for every min of the music to make perfect sense or sound but that is the nature of this project. The incredible skill is to find your way out of those moments that are not quite as they would like. The last 20mins of the RFH gig were truely fantastic . If you have played any musical instrument to any standard you will understand what it takes to do what they achieved.
Agree with below. I had an amazing time at RFH and noticed everyone who was sitting around me were really getting into it as well. I would see it ten times over if I could. I've got got a lot of respect for these guys and would recommend them to anyone.
Completely disagree with the last two comments on here. Saw them in London last night and was one of the best shows I've been to in a long while. The long standing ovation at the end suggests the majority agreed with me. Each to their own though, not necessarily everyone's cup of tea of course. Personally thought they were fantastic and so much better with orchestra than last time I saw them just as Bays in Brighton, although that was amazing too.
I was there too on Saturday. As it started all I thought I knew was that it was improvised. I had no idea that it was not quite that but real-time composition, and certainly no idea what that meant for the experience of being in the audience - amazing.
I'd agree not every minute worked as well as other minutes, but this is the very nature of experiment. Even then, there is a real thrill in experiencing something like that emerge out of the doing of it - in-the-moment. Acts of courage as music.
Just seen them tonight at the Royal Festival Hall - not impressed at all. Good idea, but just didn't sound good. The only consolation is that as the music is all improvised, nobody need ever hear it again.
