that's an FIR camera (I think, infrared, not that expensive). it can detect heat. might want to look into max/msp- calibrate the screen/area it looks at (the camera) and have it scan across the pixels left to right in some multiple. I don't know how to put this- it's not that hard, and simply getting it to read the video screen to make a physical sequencer isn't that big of a deal. these people have work to do in making the sequencer itself interesting and different.
