Kate Bush Sat in Your Lap

lyrics: I see the people working, And see it working for them. And so I want to join in, But then I find it hurts me. Some say that knowledge is something sat in your lap. Some say that knowledge...

'The Dreaming' CD. It's the album where Kate starts to (happily) shed her squeaky Bettie Boop voice and dealve into some truly kick ass rhythms. She even sings in different accents for specific songs: a callous Aussie for 'The Dreaming' & a Cockney thug for 'There Goes a Tenner.' Gotta love it because it works so well.

The song is about a quest for spiritual knowledge, not just school learning. The tall dunce caps and swirling roller-skating dance movements are also meant to evoke the motions of the Dervishes, whose holy spinning dances try to unite mortality with God. Kate has always been interested various spiritualities and addresses many of them in her early songs.

She is reaching for a goal in her mind that she thinks will bring her contentment and happiness that always ends up being the carrot on the stick.

Hence the dunce cap to communicate that we all feel stupid at times when others around us seem to have obtained a higher knowledge. Thinking that "when I am King" from climbing the knowledge mountain, it will suddenly feel like wisdom is "sat in your lap". But she goes on to express that no matter how much energy you put in to this endeavour, there's always more mountain to climb. It is never ending.

For fuck's sake. I am fed up to the back teeth of people WRONGLY reading KKK overtones in to the white costumes of the Scholars in the video.
If anyone has these knee jerk reactions to the Scholar iconography, then that says a lot about what is going on in YOUR head and not Kate's.
The costume was designed to express Kate's frustration of attaining knowledge and wisdom as a human being.
