That style of high-crowned hat came into fashion exactly at this time - early 1780s. A style-conscious opera singer was very likely to wear one. Check Raeburn's 1790s portrait of "The Skating Minister" on wikipedia, and engravings of 1780s French revolutionaries like Desmoulins. I've worked with BBC costume designers. Trust me, they are remarkably knowledgeable experts, with gimlet eyes for detail.
