'Magnolia' is one of my 20 favorite films. Aimee Mann actually wrote the music first. Paul Thomas Anderson heard it, loved it, and used the song cycle as a guide for his screenplay. I love his decision to use "Wise Up" this way in the film.
That's the point. Given just a scene where everyone is singing the same song at seemingly the same time is a completely absurd idea. In the context of the movie you don't realize it because it's been set up so well.
Yet people seem to question the raining frogs scene so much more, even though it's something that has actually happened about eight times in the past year. Their suspension of disbelief fades with this scene but is lasting with the "Wise Up" scene.
@smeixel, I respect your opinion, while simultaneously disagreeing...Tropic Thunder was a TREMENDOUSLY OVERRATED FILM. Ben Stiller gets away with shit that would never fly...he and Downey, Jr. were way over-rated in this effort, please, does anyone really think that this film was ground-breaking? No, it was not. It was stupid and derivative, like all Ben Stiller flicks.

Meh, the movie was average... which would make it a decent Ben Stiller movie. I agree with you that Stiller and Downey Jr. received way too much attention. If people want to see blackface used in a groundbreaking way then they need to check out Birth of a Nation. The problem is they'll probably also be very offended.
I still think Cruise was pretty good though in the movie. He has quite the talent playing pricks.
