My basset Saffron learned how to give hugs on her own. And other than this video, I do not encourage her to do this. she just does it on her own and I try and get her to sit down right away. She is 9 years old now and still as agile as ever so we have been lucky (Sorry, Youtube seems to rotate this when I upload it, I had it correct at time of upload).

my basset taught herself the same, she'll do it when she wants attention. it was funny watching her when she first went about trying to sit up, she was really unbalanced and we thought she was going to fall over. she would put a paw out against a wall or a chair or something to keep balance. she honed her skill, tho, and eventually one day marched into the room, sat up very straight, lowered her nose at us, and then casually walked out again.
Did Not know that it was bad for their backs for them to do that Thanks for the info very helpful !! My bassett does it just to look out the window i don't encourage it Yeah i taught her when she was young but didn't thing she would still be doing it at her age now (3) she does it juts to see out the window or to look CUTE when were eating at the table.
That's actually really bad and dangerous for bassets. Only a couple of the dozen or so bassets my family's had have begged like that. Normally they're supposed to whine when they want something.
she's adorable. Bassett's one of the best. They r very smart, cute, adorable. But's not good 4 them 2 sit-up even when she like it. Not good for her spine (bassett has long spine). my friend took her bassett for back surgery due to her darling bassett like to jump off bed, sofa & hurt her back. Hope your dog quit from sitting up before she got a bad back. Love her, she's beautiful.
Hi, its very cute and your dog is lovely but encouraging bassets to sit up like that is actually very bad for their backs. The breed has back problems anyway and this brings on early disentigration of the spine. Didn't want to bring anyone down but thought basset lovers should know.

Bassets are so silly :3
All that said, it's still enormously adorable.
