if nothing can escape how can we detect hawking radiation given off by them?

If you ended up anywhere near a black hole, death would be pretty much instant. As soon as you hit a black holes event horizon, nothing can escape its gravitational pull, not even light. And that's the reason a black hole is black, it's because you can't actually see it!

You would stretch, but you wouldn't rip in half. The reason for the stretching is due to a rapid acceleration in time as the black holes gravitational pull increases. So if your feet were closest to the black hole, time would be going faster at your feet than at your head, so in effect, your feet would be accelerating away from you, giving the illusion of stretching. You would then be crushed down to a singularity within the black hole (but you'd be dead long before this).
