I just heard several economists discussing this and the gorilla ad, and the fact is that cadbury's sales of the Dairy Milk chocolate advertised here increased over 9% since the gorilla ad, and the public's perception of the company got markedly better, with 20% more people looking favorably on a brand that had some previous PR disasters. You probably just think that the ads didn't work due to the fact that they are abstract, but they were a very good investment from a business angle.

Also doing A2 business. I analysed the campaign (mainly 'cos I liked the adverts) and found that actually they weren't that great in promoting the company. The new one though, with the big wooden head which promotes the use of Fair Trade seems to have had a positive impact.
