Brian Wilson originally intended to sing lead vocal on 'God Only Knows' but in the end he sacrificed the lead vocal to his brother Carl: "Well, I thought I was gonna do it. As the song progressed, I said, 'Hey, I feel kind of natural doing this.' But when we completed creating the song, I said my brother Carl will probably be able to impart the message better than I could, so I sacrificed that one. But he had a good time singing it."

I'm listening to this song for the upteenth time and still moves me. I shake inside. Thank God that in my lifetime I was exposed to the talents of Brian and the guys and grew with them.
@raremark Indeed, this is a just another version of perhaps the greatest song ever written...identical instrumentally, just as beautiful vocally, just different. Friggin amazing!
mikper7 Has anybody ever tried to explain the extraordinary talents that came out in the 60s. Brian & the guys, Spector sound, Frankie & Seasons, John Phillips and gang, Motown groups, Airplane, Cream, CCR, Beatles and the whole British invasion, dozens of artists doing entirely different things and giving the people so much variety and fun! Musically I am open minded and I even dig some of the rock, r&b, hip-hop, etc. of today but I have not seen or heard so much creativity since the 60s.
@raremark Yeah, I think it has something to do with the fact that so little had been done before...now EVERYTHING has been done already it seems. Also, lots of "experimentation" may have helped too.
