Both artists recorded "standards - Danny boy , Precious lord etc the only other 2 i can think of are Welcome to my world" and "He ll have to go" which Elvis covered "I love you because" was recorded by Elvis in 1954 Jims version was a hit in 1964, both great artists.

So was I. I heard his music growing up. I liked his rich (sometimes) baritone voice. It was a far cry from early country music's warbling/hick sound.

What a great and wonderful voice. It's such a tragedy that he died so young

I never considered myself a "country music" fan, but it seems that so many of my favorite early and mid-sixties favorites are country...Jim Reeves, Marty Robins, Ray Price, Leroy Van Dyke, Don Gibson, Floyd Cramer...these were the giants....I wouldn't give you 2 cents for what "passes " for country music today!
This song is classic by a real Country Gentleman!

@PutOnASweater Alan Jackson is still country. Have you ever heard of him writing or singing a bad song?
