2046 is a novel, a train, a place (both a room and place), and a time. There are two stories, the one with Zhang Ziyi is in the middle and very end; so if you pull that out, it makes the other plot easier to follow. All about how focussing on a past "love" anchors your emotions to the past so mess up future possibilities due to anchoring to the unchanging (and often idealized) past.
Personnaly, I prefer "In the Mood for Love", more "simplistic", but also more charming... But, "2046" remains a fantastic intellectual and symbolic masterpiece :-)
