Religion can be used for control, but it is the Human that is in the wrong, not he religion, Ex. Columbus,whom did not discover america, enslaved and wiped out an entire race because he could not find any riches to bring back as he promised. although he wrote that "If one never knew God, He would learn of Him through the love of the native(tianos), He wrote the Vatican recieving permission to conquer by saying, that it would save their souls, in order to save his neck. Good point. May not be American missionaries but they were Christian missionaries. I believe it was the Japanese.
