Indeed. The idea that the upper classes do not swear is wrong, they swear worse than anyone else. Back in the middle ages, when noblemen spoke French primarily, they learnt English from their servants, and picked up some choice words which they used freely. However, the upper classes see swearing in public as a negative thing.

I disagree. The idea that the word is vulgar is the very reason people use the word. After all, if the words were not offensive there would be no purpose in using them, they would be pointless.

People swear because they want to be associated the charateristics of a person who swears (likely to break the rules, potentially out of control, violent, aggressive) and people (like some upper classes) avoid swearing because they see those very same characterists as negative, rather than positive.

Everyone CAN swear and should! The value judgement that swearing is bad or vulgar originates in the upper class and those who seek to emulate them is all I'm observing and reporting.
