At the premiere of the Ninth the audience DID give an ovation at the end of the second movement. This was typical of the time, the way we applaud at the end of each song at modern concerts. Holding applause until the very end of a work dates back only a hundred years or so, to Mahler's time. Beethoven routinely asked performers how the audiences had reacted to each movement of his works, such as his quartets.

Perhaps it was not unusual to occasionally applaud at the end of a movement? Hmmmm

I read somewhere that people did applaud between movements till the beggining of the 20th century.

Very good observation, Iwas thinking that myself. Iguess it's simply for the sake of the film >.>
