OMG!! This is soooo sad! My calss and I watched the Atlantis go up on Monday and it was fine. After that, all the boys in my class watched this video. It was soooo sad! Poor astronauts! I feel so bad, also because a teacher was on the ship!!
It's not that they didn't care. They just didn't know. Remember, it's going 2000 mph away from them and climbing, 9 miles high, 7 miles downrange and the viewing area is another 3 miles away. So they really are a long way away, and probably have never seen an in person launch, which having seen a couple in person, they look quite different in person than they do on tv.
The people who had been there and seen launches before knew immediately that something was up. There were lots of people who hadn't seen one in person though, this was their first time. It did take quite a while for them to realize what happened.
Very sad, Amazing what shock does to people, they just didn't realise at first that all the crew had instantly been killed, as for Christa McAuliffe's parents it must have been terrible to see that, i cant actually think of anything worse to happen to a parent, the reason they dont appear to be bothered is because the camera gives you a bad idea of what they can see, its not obvious to them from the ground whats actually going on when it explodes.
