What's more, jug was apparently rarely used musically in the vast majority of the South during the actual old-time era (before roughly 1910). Much of what's been written about supposed pre-1920 widespread musical use of jug is based on the writings of the late Fred Cox, writings that people are realizing these days were apparently completely fictional in places.
