INTRODUCTION Sir Henry Royce was the driving force behind the fabulous "R" racingmotor and Reginald Mitchell - Supermarines chiefdesigner - designed the racingplanes with which England in 1931 won the international speed contest for seaplanes - The Schneider Trophy.
Three years later Mitchell presented the first design of a new fighter to RAF. The first three designs had too weak an engine and were rejected, but in 1935 the fourth with elliptical wings had a 27 litres lightweight twelve cylinder scaled down "R" engine which was called "Merlin" - and the Spitfire was born.
The word Spitfire is known to every boy from eight to eighty all over the world for its magic, that will live for generations to come of boys and men and indeed of some girls and women too, whos mother or grandmother flew this legendary fighter to the bases during the second world war, when the Spitfire was present on every front in the airwar against nazi-Germany, the fascist Italy and the fascist Japanese Empire, although it originally was conceived as a short-range fighter to the defense of The British Isles.
Mitchell did not like the name Spitfire which he found rediculus, but once it had come up, it became widely popular (in contradiction to the officially proposed Shrew) and it fortunately became impossible to change. How sad it was, that he did not live to see the Spitfire in service.

Let us thank our British freinds for making Mitchel (Spitfire developer) possible in the first place! This aircraft, in it's original RAF forms, and also in it's later P-51D variants (same Merlin engine with a similar airframe again folks) represented the best that the free world could throw at Hitler at the time...and it was better than it had to be for that task. We Americans forget that we came into the war ca. 2 yrs. AFTER the British but finished the job for the Allies with British help!
The Americans entered the war to stop the soviets winning it completely and expanding their sphere of influence into western europe. Ninety percent of the Nazi's lost their lives at the eastern front and has had far fiercer battles and more misery than the western and mediterranean theaters combined. The russian war machine at that time was unstoppable. They also had the best planes for low and medium altitudes.
Churchill begged American pilots to come over because ours had been fighting a war for 4 years!
On US aircraft, yes, some were outstanding, but in terms of pure dogfighting ability, the P51D was inferior to both the later marks of Spitfire, and the Fw190D-9, so your statement about the only true fighting planes being American is ridiculous and absurd.
Churchill begged American flyers to come over, as he knew they were the best in the world. Everyone knew the legendaryu skills of the American pilot. Amelia Erheart, Charles Lindbergh and Billy Fiske were all household names. England had no famous pilots like this. When Billy Fiske came to England to mentor the raw trainees in the RAF, Churchill was overjoyed. The Germans were not looking forward to skies full of American aices either. They were soon to meet these "knoghts of the air". .
Heh, don't worry mate, he probably doesn't even know who are responsible for the success of the US "Top-Gun" scheme either (hint, non US naval aviators).
But let's not forget the contribution of the commonwealth and other allied nations' pilots during the battle of britain!
you're sweeping statements all over youtube are so outlandish that i cant get into this with you cos im convinced your actually just taking the piss to get a rise out of people. otherwise I feel sorry for you, youre probably 12 and read too many comic books! billy Fiske is said by his fellow pilots to have been a rather unremarkable character who contributed little to the squadron before being killed with no kills, that must eat you up:0
