Five authors from across the UK have been announced as category winners for the 2008 Costa Book Awards. Costa, the UKs fastest growing coffee chain, today announced the winners in the First Novel, Novel, Biography, Poetry and Childrens Book Award categories.
The winning authors are:
Sadie Jones - Winner of the 2008 Costa First Novel Award for The Outcast (Chatto & Windus) Adam Foulds - Winner of the 2008 Costa Poetry Award for The Broken Word (Jonathan Cape) Diana Athill - Winner of the 2008 Costa Biography Award for Somewhere Towards The End` (Granta) Sebastian Barry - Winner of the 2008 Costa Novel Award for The Secret Scripture (Faber And Faber) Michelle Magorian Winner Of The 2008 Costa Childrens Book Award for Just Henry (Egmont Press)
All five authors will receive £5,000, and are now eligible for the ultimate prize the 2008 Costa Book of the Year which will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday 27th January at the Intercontinental Hotel in London. The winning author will receive a cash prize of £25,000.
Originally established in 1971 by Whitbread Plc, Costa announced its takeover of the sponsorship of the UK's most prestigious book prize in 2006. The Awards recognise the most enjoyable books of the last year by writers based in the UK and Ireland.
This years Awards attracted 616 entries; the highest-ever number of submissions in one year. Each shortlist was chosen by a panel of judges, including actress and writer Pauline McLynn; writers Victoria Hislop and Lisa Jewell; journalist, writer and broadcaster Michael Buerk and award-winning poet and children's author Roger McGough.
