Actually, the NES could easily handle sprites that detailed if they were that big.

For example, at 0:34, I count nine, maybe ten colors. Easily renderable by an NES. 0:51 is much more demanding, but flickers accordingly.

This is an amazingly accurate video, if I do say so myself.

The colors is not the issue, it's the resolution. I do not intend to waste my time counting pixels, but it looks too high. I could be wrong though.
