Yeah good point. Don't forget Transformers and Ninja Turtles; I owned about a million pieces of cheap plastic licensed by them. I also remember seeing My Little Pony and Barbie cartoons, so they were getting money from the parents of the girls too.
True, the Transformers cartoons were made to market the toys. However in the case of Ninja Turtles, it originally started out as a comic book series. The merchandising came in later.
