unreported world india

Reporter Ramita Navai and producer Siobhan Sinnerton travel through India exposing the horrific plight of the country's 170 million Dalits: literally "the broken people", and previously called "the untouchables"; who are at the bottom of India's caste system and are some of the most oppressed people on Earth. Economic growth has done little to improve the Dalits' lot; despite legislation, they still form 60 per cent of all those below the poverty line. Now, as Unreported World reports, Dalits are starting to fight for political power in an Indian civil rights movement.why is no one talking about this we were all up in arms about shilpa shetty the muslims got upset over a book and a cartoon and are always screaming about kashmir & palestine , the sikhs got upset over a play, but what about the plight of the dalits no one has said anyting.

  • The so called fuckin upper class look just the same.

  • So because the British screwed India, these injustices should not be covered? Are you more concerned with India's reputation to the outside world than helping your people? If a journalist came to my country and uncovered such horrors (of course they exist in every country!), I would be honoured. Underdogs throughout the world deserve a voice, no matter who gives it to them. (PS: The journalist is not British. Oh, and some of the best films about Dalits are made by Indians).

  • what the fuck is wrong with India, does this people have no voice?this is worst than Arabic world.Freedom to humanity

  • @FareezLovesMe These are people who have blood in their veins and mind in their heart. They are not made of stones. They deserve a better life. If cannot help them, just don't blame them for what they are. Open up your mind before its too late!

  • @FareezLovesMe how lovely.........

  • @adeqjin The lowest of castes in Hinduism consists of the Sudras. However, the Dalits are lower than the Sudras. They are caste-less and therefore they are less than humans as far as the caste Hindus are concerned. If a caste Hindu were to touch a Dalit, he or she would be polluted.

  • @adeqjin Castes in Hinduism is determined by birth and your caste determined the type of job you can do. The higher your caste, the better the chances you have at education, jobs, enjoying higher standards of living. It's a vicious cycle. The Dalits, which is actually outside of the caste system ( meaning that they are lower than the lowest castes Hindu ) are often denied education, discriminated against for healthcare etc. So they remain poor and trapped in their situation.

  • @beautyinthesparkle In Hinduism, people are divided into 4 groups with the Brahmins the highest and the Sudras the lowest. But the Dalits are lower than the Sudras. These status are determined by birth. So you can be a Dalit millionaire but you would be still be untouchable, be a dalit. But if you're a Brahmin but dirt poor, you're still high-caste, still honourable.

  • :(

  • pathetic

  • In India many states have started 'affirmative action' to give entry level government jobs to daalit people, but because of the way people think, I don't think this will be enough, because a Brahmin prostitute will often be treated better than a daalit with a respectable (albeit low paying) government job.

  • I wish she would stop using her damn hands so much!
