A short video, set to music, in memory of those members of HM Armed Forces murdered by Irish Terrorists.

The sacrifice of Sergeant Michael G. Willets, 27, 3 Para.

On the evening of the 25th May 1971 an IRA terrorist entered the reception hall of Springfield Road Police station in Belfast. He carried a suitcase from which a smoking fuse protruded, dumping the case on the floor he fled out-side, inside the room were a man a woman and two children and several police officers. One of the police officers raised the alarm then began organising an evacuation of the hall through the reception office.

Sgt Willetts was on duty in the inner hall, on hearing the alarm he sent an NCO to the first floor to warn those above and hastened himself to the door towards which the police officer was thrusting those in the reception hall and office.

He held the door open while all passed safely through and then stood in the doorway shielding those taking cover.

In the next moment the bomb exploded with terrible force. Sgt Willetts was mortally wounded. His duty did not require him to enter the threatened area. All those people who were approaching the door from the far side agreed that if they had had to check to open the door, They would have perished.

Sgt Willetts waited, placing his body as a screen to shelter them.

By this act of bravery, he risked and lost his life for those of the adults and children.

Sgt Michael Willetts was awarded the George Cross (Posthumous).

Republicans jeered when the ambulance arrived, but Willets had saved Catholic civilians and children. The IRA had no such respect for life.

A true British hero.

  • I defy anyone to name one republican who performed such a selfless act to protect the lives of those who considered them "murderers not friends". Sgt Willetts is a shining example of the best traditions of the British Army in the face of animal hatred. May God forgive them!

  • I saw some awful shocking things. Now 40 years on and living on the other side of the world I'm still drawn to all this horror. Now, being away from it all I can see the futility of it all from a humantirian point of view. May God bless those on all sides; they all fought for what they thought was right......... who was right and who was wrong? The human factor comes into play... all involved were human beings fighting for their cause. None of them thought they were in the wrong.

  • HERO

  • can't lissen to this without crying / from an ex serviceman who lost a friend on patrol in ireland,

  • sgt m.g.willets was a true profesional soldier and deserves to be remembered allot more than he has been :(

did he even get a medal for this?

  • It makes you cry, what we as humans do to each other. Yet even though this depicts the horrors we do to each other, it also shows the selflessness and good that exists in all of us.

What hurts me most is the way they jeered at him after he died, despite the way he gave his life for their own kin.

Sigh, whenever I hear this, i strangely get a tingling a numinous feeling. I'm not religous, but its just one of those things.

  • It's ALWAYS been one of my favourite tracks, and I'm truly ashamed to say (honestly) that for nearly 35 years years I hadn't known it was based on an actual event. I am in even more admiration for the song and especially for Sgt Willetts who's courage was inestimatable - makes no difference whether I agree(d) with the conflict or not - his heroism was indisputable.

  • ira scum

  • He didn't actually lie on the bomb, he used his body to try to reinforce a door in order to protect the people from the blast which came from inside the (now empty) room which he had just cleared of people.

I did my bit with the British army in NI in 1977 and I was very moved by this video. However I do strongly object to the revolting image shown at 4:22.....I just pray that his mother never sees it!!! Otherwise a good video.

  • it was a selfless act of kindness its just wats goin on in afganistan what a kind man

  • this song is deep,
