Reporter Ramita Navai and producer Siobhan Sinnerton travel through India exposing the horrific plight of the country's 170 million Dalits: literally "the broken people", and previously called "the untouchables"; who are at the bottom of India's caste system and are some of the most oppressed people on Earth. Economic growth has done little to improve the Dalits' lot; despite legislation, they still form 60 per cent of all those below the poverty line. Now, as Unreported World reports, Dalits are starting to fight for political power in an Indian civil rights movement.why is no one talking about this we were all up in arms about shilpa shetty the muslims got upset over a book and a cartoon and are always screaming about kashmir & palestine , the sikhs got upset over a play, but what about the plight of the dalits no one has said anyting.

Caste is so disgusting! I live in Canada, specifically Ontario and I live in a city that has a high indian population both hindus and sikhs, and caste still matters to them even outside of india. i'm not indian but i've talked to both indian immigrants and canadian born indians and they say that they will not associate with people outside of their caste... this behaviour makes me so sick.

I was born and brought up in Kerala till my mid 20's and I can say Caste system is very much deep rooted in kerala. A typical example is the kerala politics. All the major parties thrive on the backing of "strong" communities(which includes upper caste/OBC hindus, christians, muslims) except SC/ST's. Even in this year I have heard reports of dalit people who doesn't have home, food and no education(thanks to my journalist cousin).

so true! when a christian tries to marry a hindu (happens in love marriage), they look at the caste of Hindu. If its not an upper caste, most probably it won't end up in marriage.

There are different classes in any society. But to simply write it off as saying "every society works in this way" is a gross over generalization.

You cannot make any comparisons to the "classes" based upon economy for the US or Western Europe where White collared crime such as embezzlement may occur. Where as in India you have full fledged rape and murder without trial (Unless its an exceptional case). The caste system is disgusting and most be abolished.

While I totally agree with those who denounce the "caste system"; I felt it necessary to point out that almost every society on Earth works this way, whether we like to admit it or not.

I live in the US, which boasts to be the best country on Earth... Ask the politicians/bankers and you'd be right, but ask the nations homeless and you would see a very different picture.

Even the "middle-class"(which sounds like it fits right into a caste system) is being shoved down further away from the rich.

It's disheartening that in homogeneous societies, cultures are so strong that is overrules rational behaviour. There needs to be some significant changes to the way people think and behave in these third world countries.

India needs to unite! All her people! But Dalits also need to stop relying on non-Dalits like Runoko Rashidi and The guy who writes for the "Dalit Voice". These people actually hurt the dalits image more so than redeem it. It wasn't the "Black panthers" nor the "Nation of Islam" that redeemed the surpression in America but peaceful people like Martin Luthur King jr. Pan-Africanism is a lie, Dalits should realize they are THE INDIANS not a runaway group of Africans. Peace for all of India.
