Low note is definately C but it appears that he plays the D form when he hits his low note. So I am going with standard tuning with a drop D but tuned a whole stop down so the lowest note is a C!
Concerning others who are carrying the torch: check out Ken Hamm. Not too much on YouTube but his album "Galvanized" is some of the best guitar/ voice renditions of old classics like this one.
There some beautiful Gibson Guitars, Les Paul, semi ES335, ES175 and the Jumbo that Rev Gary Davis had but to me that L4, I think it is, is not. I looked it up the L4 sell at $1000 and they have, I am told, been sold on Ebay for $600. Quite cheap for guitars today. However, in the hands of Sam Chatmon its part of his incredible sound. I am sure you will not agree me but each to his own. Thanks for your comment
You could post your full postal address here but you seem to be doing pretty well with those resonators, some great slide work, really like it. I heard another l4 which sounded great, so maybe if I find one for real I'll just have to keep it for myself.
