It's tapping into either the unconscious mind, as can also be done with the pendulum, or it's tapping into the universal conscious. If you want to understand the science behind the latter, check the work done by quantum physicist Dr Gregg Braden. He has several books on the subject, but his lectures about his book "The Divine Matrix" are available on YouTube. I like to have the explanation and his research has really helped me.
