He was a flightless bird whose only dream was to be able to fly. He spent all this time nailing the trees sideways down the cliff so that when he jumped it would simulate actually flying over the trees.

I think we wanted to die because he got to spend his last moment thinking that he could fly and if he survived then he we feel the disappointment that it wasn't real.
